Providing Expert Care and Pain Relief

When dental emergencies happen, patients at Dental Care Today of Richardson know they have someone to turn to for help. Dr. David Nguyen and his knowledgeable dental team are always here when patients need us. In fact, we can typically provide treatment for patients on the same day that they call during dental emergencies. If for any reason we’re unable to see patients on the day they contact us, we’ll walk them through at-home care and pain management over the phone. If you’re not sure whether or not your situation requires urgent dental care, we encourage you to contact our team anyway. We’ll discuss the situation with you over the phone and help you determine what the best course of action may be.

HOW TO HANDLE COMMON DENTAL EMERGENCIES

Dental emergencies will typically fall into 2 categories: infections and injuries. Infections or toothaches are usually caused by poor oral hygiene over time, and injuries or accidents are sudden and physical. At Dental Care Today of Richardson, Dr. Nguyen is experienced in recognizing and treating both types of emergencies to provide you with relief as soon as possible. It’s important that you seek help immediately because both injuries and infections can have a lasting impact on your oral and overall health. If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort, call our office right away for treatment. In the meantime, here’s how to handle some of the most common dental emergencies:

Toothaches

If you’re experiencing a toothache, try rinsing your mouth out with warm water and flossing around the area. Instead of a serious problem, it may just be some annoying food debris. If your pain persists, contact our office as soon as possible. You may be in need of a root canal to remove infected and damaged parts of your tooth to prevent extraction or the infection spreading.

Chipped/Broken Tooth

Broken or chipped teeth can be painful and shocking. If this occurs, pick up the pieces of your teeth and rinse them off. Use gauze or bandages to stop any bleeding and apply a cold-compress to the outside of your face to numb the pain and stop swelling. After you’ve made yourself a little more comfortable, call us right away for treatment. Dr. Nguyen will evaluate your mouth to see what type of treatment you may need. If the tooth is too badly damaged, you may need to get it extracted.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If your tooth gets knocked-out, pick it up by the crown to avoid damaging the roots and rinse it off. Try to put it back in its socket, holding it in place with your tongue. If this isn’t possible, keep it in water or milk until you can get in to visit us. The sooner you can visit us, the more likely that your tooth can be successfully replanted.

Lost Filling/Crown

If you lose a crown or filling, apply dental cement or adhesive to the affected area and reattach it. The main goal is to protect the sensitive part of your tooth that is now exposed until you can come in for treatment. If the decayed portion of your tooth is left unprotected, it can cause serious pain and discomfort.

HOW TO PREVENT DENTAL EMERGENCIES

In some cases, patients can avoid emergencies by changing habits. That includes discontinuing any habits like pencil, nail, or ice chewing that may lead to damage. We also recommend patients avoid using their teeth as a tool to open packages or crack nuts. Additionally, if you or a loved one plays any contact sports or participates in physical activity, wear a protective mouthguard.

Most importantly, maintaining a complete daily oral hygiene routine that includes thorough brushing and flossing will protect and strengthen your smile. If you’re ever concerned your emergency is life threatening, don’t hesitate to contact us, but we encourage you to seek care at your local emergency clinic.

THE COST OF TREATING DENTAL EMERGENCIES

Unfortunately, determining the cost of a dental emergency is hard without knowing what the exact issue is. You may have an issue that can be fixed at home with medication, or you could have a more serious issue that requires advanced care like a root canal, extraction, or replacement. Visit our office today for a fair estimate after Dr. Nguyen gives your mouth a careful examination. We even offer a $59 new patient emergency dental visit that includes an exam and X-Rays of your mouth to provide you with quality and affordable dentistry.
